Learning to ski for little ones in Flachau

Little ones can learn to ski with us from as young as 2.5 years. At the start it is not about being able to do as much as possible as quickly as possible. Your little darling should get used to skis and snow, gain confidence and develop a joy of skiing.

Which course is the right one depends on age and on how comfortable your child feels in the snow. For the smallest we offer short one-to-one lessons; first group courses are possible from 3.5 years.

Not sure which course suits your child best? We are happy to advise you.

Toddler

Minis from 2.5 to 3 1/2 years can have their first contact with skis in our dino world in 45-minute sessions. Specially trained ski instructors work with just one child. The programme includes: walking with skis, riding the magic carpet and gliding straight downhill. Such preparatory exercises make it easier to start skiing in the coming seasons. Bookable daily, subject to staff availability.

2-hour Mini-Bambini course for 3 1/2 to 4-year-olds

Ski play lessons for little ones from 3 1/2 years. Morning groups have a maximum of 7 children per group. In two-hour courses we guide your children with child-friendly exercises, step by step, from getting used to the equipment through walking and gliding to making turns. This course can be booked on a day-by-day basis.

From what age does a ski course make sense for little ones?

First experiences on skis are possible with us from 2.5 years. For children under 3.5 years we use one-to-one lessons. From 3.5 years, children can learn to ski together in a small group.

Age alone does not say everything, though. What matters most is that the little ones themselves want to ski and enjoy the snow. Some children want to get going straight away, others need a bit more time. Both are perfectly fine.

That is why we have the right option for every age and every level:

Course Age Course format Course start Meeting time Course time Meeting point
Toddler 2.5–3.5 years 1:1 one-to-one lessons Mon-Sat 08:30, 11:30 or 14:30, 45 minutes each Starjet or Spacejet
Mini-Bambini 3.5–4 years Group course, beginners
1-5 half-days
Sunday and Monday 8:50 09:30–11:30 Starjet or Spacejet
Bambini on Skis 4–6 years Group course – blue to orange level

Pre-Season 4 – 12 years Group course – blue to black level

Sunday and Monday 8:50 9:30 – 12:00 Starjet or Spacejet

When booking you choose the right ability level for your child. Short videos for each level help you find the right level.

Pre-Season: additional offer for children aged 4 to 12

In the Pre-Season (until 19 December) we offer a compact 2.5-hour ski course for children aged 4 to 12. There are separate groups for beginners and advanced skiers, so the kids can learn and practise in line with their skiing ability.

Ski course for 2.5- to 3.5-year-olds: Toddler one-to-one lessons

A ski course for 3-year-olds looks different from a classic children’s ski course. With our Toddlers the focus is not on quickly learning a particular technique. Instead, in 45-minute one-to-one lessons your child can gather first experiences with skis and snow in peace. Together with the instructor they practise walking with skis, riding the magic carpet and making first attempts at gliding straight downhill.

Because the instructor in one-to-one lessons is there entirely for your little darling, they can respond directly to how brave, curious or cautious your child is at that moment. That leaves plenty of room to try new things without your child having to keep up with a group.

Ski course for 3.5- to 4-year-olds: Mini-Bambini or Bambini on Skis?

If little ones want to learn to ski in a group, there are two options to choose from. The Mini-Bambini course is for 3.5- to 4-year-olds who learn to ski for two hours together with other children. From 4 years there is also Bambini on Skis for kids up to 6 years.

Around the fourth birthday in particular, the age ranges can therefore overlap. If you are not sure which ski course is better for your 4-year-old, we are happy to help you choose.

Mini-Bambini: together in the snow

In the Mini-Bambini course children aged 3.5 to 4 years gain their first experiences in a small group. Through playful exercises they get used to the ski equipment and learn step by step to walk, glide and make their first turns on skis.

Bambini on Skis: the next step from 4 years

From 4 years, kids can keep learning with Bambini on Skis. The offer is available for both beginners and advanced skiers. Teaching and exercises are based on what the young skiers can already do and how confident they are on skis.

Learning to ski through play, without pressure

When little ones learn to ski, confidence and joy matter more than making progress as fast as possible. That is why we work with an educational curriculum and playful exercises.

Children develop differently. Some are enthusiastic from the start, others prefer to watch first or need longer before they trust themselves. Our ski instructors respond to that.

Partner and group exercises accommodate different rates of progress within a group. If your little darling is still a bit cautious or unsure, they get the time they need. Pressure has no place in learning to ski, as far as we are concerned.

How can I tell if my child is ready for a ski course?

Whether a child is ready for a ski course does not depend on the date of birth alone. Interest and joy matter most.

A good time has come when your child:

  • is curious about skiing themselves,
  • likes playing in the snow and feels comfortable there,
  • wants to try out new movements.

For the group course it is especially important that the desire really comes from the little ones themselves. If your darling is still reserved, nothing needs to be rushed. With the very youngest in particular, a short one-to-one lesson can be a gentle introduction.

Experience and training in children’s ski teaching

When little ones learn to ski, more than pure ski technique counts. Our ski school has been guiding families in Flachau since 1967. Teaching children is a fixed part of our work.

Our team includes ski instructors at different qualification levels, among them Landesskilehrer 1 and 2 as well as state-certified ski instructors. Our instructors also go through intensive in-house preparation for their work.

Where do the ski courses for little ones in Flachau take place?

Our ski school has two locations at the valley stations of Starjet 1 and Spacejet 1. You will find out which meeting point belongs to your booked course when you book.

  • Starjet 1: right in the centre of Flachau and within walking distance of many accommodations. The practice area is right next to the lift.
  • Spacejet 1: easy to reach by car and ski bus, with a large car park at the valley station. The children’s area and practice lift are right next to the Spacejet.

That keeps the distances between ski school office, meeting point and practice area short.

How to book the right ski course for your little one

When little ones learn to ski, the course should match age and ability. Choose the course when booking that fits your child’s age and previous skills. You will find the meeting point and course details directly in the booking. For Toddler one-to-one lessons you can reserve on site at the ski school office or by email. A guaranteed place is, however, only secured once payment has been made.

For 2.5- to 3.5-year-old Toddler and 3.5- to 4-year-old Mini-Bambini in the 2-hour course, ski equipment is included free of charge.

Not sure which course fits? Call us on +43 6457 21 80 or write to us at info@skischuleflachau.at. We will help you choose.

Frequently asked questions about learning to ski with little ones

For children from 2.5 to 3.5 years we use one-to-one lessons. From 3.5 years children can learn together with others in the Mini-Bambini course. Besides age, what matters is whether your child themselves wants to ski and be taught in a group.

The two-hour Mini-Bambini course costs from €77. You can find the current prices at the booking.

Toddlers (2.5–3.5 years) are always taught 1:1. In Mini-Bambini (3.5–4 years) at least 3 and at most 7 children learn together in a group. That leaves enough room for personal attention and at the same time for learning together and having fun in the snow.

Then we adjust the pace and give your child time to gain confidence. With the youngest in particular we do not force any exercises – the joy of snow and skiing should stay in the foreground.

Yes, for Toddlers (2.5–3.5 years) and Mini-Bambinis (3.5–4 years) in the 2-hour course, ski equipment is included free of charge.
